arrested and handcuffed anthony sanchez yesterday on hillsdale avenue in south san jose and somehow sanchez was able to slip his handcuffs to the front of his body. he then hopped into the driver's seat of a police van and simply drove off. he ultimately ditched that van in a neighborhood near almaden expressway and wren drive. police were able to find that van but they could not find sanchez. police are currently looking for sanchez, a 32-year-old man from san jose. he was arrested for a probation violation and warrants. he's 5'8" and 275 pounds. >>> new this morning, san jose fire investigators are looking for the cause of an overnight house fire near the rose ganrden. the home was vacant. here's pictures from this morning. it happened a little after 1:30 at a home near dana avenue and mckendrie street, just a few blocks from the rose garden. >>> new details expected today surrounding a triple murder in sonoma county. a victim's brother found three men shot to death inside a home in forestville on tuesday afternoon. investigators linking the killings to an illegal marijuana deal. an autop

daring escape. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. anthony sanchez is a big guy. to lessen the stress on his shoulders,an jose police linked two pairs of handcuffs together when they put him in handcuffs and put his arms behind his back. he used their kindness to their advantage and gave san jose police officers the slip yesterday. he stole a police van, they say, from detectives who had just taken him into custody on drug related warrants. police handcuffed him and put him in an unmarked van. an officer was doing paperwork when sanchez slipped the cuffs off, probably moving them under his body and he took off. the keys were in the ignition at the time. fortunately the van was found two hours later where his disappearing act is quite unsettling for neighbors. >> i was kind of shocked. you know, who can do that? big guy. how can he get out of -- we're kind of don't know what to think. kind of scary. >> reporter: san jose police say there were no weapons in that van. anthony sanchez is 5'8" to 5'10" tall, he was last seen wearing black sweats and a sweatshirt. he's not consid

they do is link two pairs of handcuffs together and that's what happened in the case of anthony sanchez and he was able to give san jose police the slip. they were trying to ease stress on his shoulders and he took advantage. police say he was able to move the cuffs probably under his body and take off in an unmarked police minivan. it started about 3:30 in the afternoon on thursday. police arrested him on a drug related probation warrant. when officers were outside the van filling out paperwork, they say sanchez made his move. the van was located about two hours later about a mile away and neighbor wes were stunned b his disappearing act. >> who can do that? big guy. how can he get out? we don't know what to think. kind of scary. >> reporter: now nothing was stolen from the van and he's not considered dangerous. sanchez is 5'8" to 5'10" tall, 250 to 275 pounds. big guy. last seen wearing black sweats and a gray sweatshirt with cuffs possibly still on his arm. he may have gotten those off. it's unfortunate because this was really only a probation violation which would have meant minimal

sanchez joins us live from san jose. what's the reason for the price tag this time? >> reporter: well, jessica, there are a lot of different reasons, they are very frustrated. they say they're used to paying higher gas prices here in california and they are also used to paying more for that summer blend of gas that is more expensive but we're transitioning to now. 32 cents in one month is pretty frustrating. >> i think it's outrageous. >> reporter: watching the gas prices go up as he drove cross-country from minnesota to the golden state. in the last month alone up 32 cents average of $3.93 a gallon of regular unleaded. >> you don't really have an option. you have to keep going. you can't just quit life just because the gas goes up. >> reporter: san francisco is really feeling the pain. his car takes the most expensive gas. >> it had gone down to a good level $4 for supreme. unfortunately, i have to get supreme on this. then $4.09 a gallon. it's frustrating. >> reporter: aaa says there's a number of reasons for the spike in california because of scheduled and unscheduled refinery main

by the department of labor for paying 14 workers less than a third of the minimum wage. nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us live in sunnyvale with that story. >> reporter: hi there, jessica. bloom energy has raised more than $2 billion in investments and both former secretary of state colin powell is one of its board members and yet the labor department says this is also a company that willfully shorted to pay more than a dozen of its workers. bloomenergy corporation create add major buzz in 2010 when it unveiled the bloom box, the high efficiency fuel cell dubbed the holy grail of green energy. but today only two words -- no comment -- in regard to a labor of energy investigation of them bringing 14 mexican nationals to work on refurbishing generators and paid them less than $3 an hour. the wages were paid in pesos deposited into bank accounts in mexico. >> in talking to the mexican nationals, we did find that what the employer was doing, they were paying them but they were being paid in pesos, the equivalent of $2.66 an hour. >> reporter: blanco says her investigators discovered the 14 m mexican

on the tense negotiations between the city and the police union. let's bring in kris sanchez from san jose city hall. kris? >> reporter: hi there, raj. the union says the city walked away from the negotiating table though the mayor says both sides are talking. he's also already called for an arbitrator and an arbitration date so this could be very tough negotiating. san jose has fewer than 1,000 police officers on the streets, the lowest level of staffing in years, and some might argue the lowest morale. to change that the police union wants the city to turn back the clock on pay in the next contract. >> we're in our third year of getting back money. right now we're getting back 10% of our wages. this offer calls for an end to that starting in july followed a year later by a 3% raise and a year after that for a 3% raise. >> reporter: he says that has to happen if san jose wants to stem the tide of resignations. 139 sjd police officers left in the last 13 months. the mayor says the city can't afford it. >>

. kris sanchez, nx bay area news. >>> the dry spell is nearly over. rain will return tomorrow. here's a live look outside at silicon valley. it's clear now but that's all about to change. let's bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri from the nbc bay area weather center with more. jeff? >> 13 days since our last major rain across the bay area, and for that matter, we haven't seen much of anything in 2013. satellite radar picture tonight look like a storm is coming. you can see very clear conditions across the greater bay area but we zoom out and the area i'm focusing in on is 334 miles away. that is the zone with the cold front that will eventually bring us our first rain drops again in 13 days. now let's take a look. tonight that increasing cloud cover throughout san mateo and san francisco counties and then for tomorrow morning as we zoom in, it's that area there in the north bay, napa, morin, sonoma county. anyone traveling from santa rosa down to san francisco will get those rain drops first. we are tracking not only the rain but some extremely low snow. we'll let you know who
